Overview of the Example Installation Room

Our example room is 19' long by 18' wide and the screen is straight ahead as you enter the room (center/left in the illustration above). Additional components in our example installation include a 61" projection screen, DVD, cable box and VCR. We set up the Lifestyle® music center and the multi-room interface on the top left of the projection screen. The DVD is in the center and the digital cable box and VCR are on the right.

All the Jewel Cube speakers should be placed at a seated ear level or higher, if possible. We ran the three front (left-center-right) speaker cables using feed-through bushings to enter the walls near the speakers. To avoid splicing the speaker wires, we split the feed-through bushings with a utility knife and placed them around the wires. We filled in the cut sections with white caulk that was also used to secure the bushings to the walls and ceiling. The front side speakers are mounted to the walls using part #UB-20, the optional wall/ceiling mount brackets (shown above). The front left and right speakers were installed 2' from each side of the projection screen at a height equal to the center of the screen. The front center speaker setup is mounted to the ceiling above the screen using the same bracket kit (shown above).

The rear speaker wires were run inside white wire raceway, which is affixed above the baseboard. Double-sided tape is pre-attached to the raceway for easy installation. Raceway is easy to cut with a utility knife and blends well with the white baseboard. Corner caps are available for all wire turns. The rear speakers are mounted on the optional floor stands, part #UFS-20 (shown above). These floor stands put the speakers at ear level while sitting in the listening area.

Bose Acoustimass module.

Split flexible tubing is used to keep the wires neat from the Acoustimass module to the wall (shown above). The wires enter the wall through the module hole of a single gang media faceplate. Flexible tubing is also used on the wires that run to the rear of the projection screen.

You must determine the ideal method for running the wiring for your installation. New construction or renovation provides the best opportunity to pre-run the wiring inside the walls, however easy access from basements, crawl spaces or drop ceilings facilitates wire runs in existing rooms. Wire raceway (shown above) outside the walls is best for wire runs along walls that are difficult or impossible to traverse. For illustrative purposes, we used both methods for our wire runs.

If you are not sure about the construction of your walls you should consult with a licensed electrician for more specific information about your installation choices. Different home theater systems are wired in various configurations so remember to check with the specific company for information before you pre-wire.

Note: All the speaker wiring used in this example installation came included with the system, however, if you are pre-wiring, you may use 18-guage speaker cable or extension RCA cables.

Bose 6 CD changer.

The illustration above shows the Bose 6-CD changer and the multi-room interface. On the back of the multi-room interface are the connections for the antenna input, Bose 6-CD changer input, auxiliary inputs, two additional stereo inputs and tape in and out (see closeup below). The room outputs on the right use a proprietary cable that connects to the Acoustimass module. The digital pigtail input is located on this cable as well. We used the output to room (A).

Bose Personal music center. The photograph above shows the Personal® music center which places complete control of system operations in your hands. The center is portable, communicating with the rest of the system through a two-way radio-frequency link. See:"System highlights" for additional information

There are three additional special outputs that can send signal to add-on powered speakers used for optional multi-room expansion.

The Acoustimass speaker module houses the connections for the five additional speakers. The five speakers which are comprised of front (left-center-right) and rear (left-right) make the 5 in 5.1 surround sound. The .1 refers to the Acoustimass speaker module .

Bose speaker connections.

The illustration above shows the bottom of the Acoustimass module . Connections are shown for the front, Left-Center-Right speakers (blue) and the rear Left-Right speakers (orange). The end that connects to the Acoustimass module is standard RCA and can be extended. The black cable shown on the top of the illustration is the proprietary cable from the room A connection on the multi-room expansion interface. The cable shown on the bottom is the AC cord.

Bose audio inputs.

The illustration above shows a closeup of the input and output connections on the multi-room interface.

The illustration above shows the back audio connections from a DVD player to the multi-room expansion interface. The DVD digital out (sometimes referred to as S/PDIF or Coaxial) connects to the pigtail that is attached to the output cable connected to room (A). The DVD stereo analog outputs connect to the aux inputs. You should connect both digital and analog. If there is a break or pause in the digital bit stream, the system defaults to analog. The audio and video connections shown use standard RCA cables. The digital out to the pigtail uses a standard RCA cable as well.

Bose audio connections.

The illustration above shows the DVD analog connections as well as the connections for the remaining units to the multi-room interface. The DVD analog stereo outputs connect to the analog AUX input in addition to the aforementioned digital connection to the pigtail. The cable receiver stereo outputs connect to video 1. The VCR stereo outputs connect to video 2. All of the analog connections use standard audio RCA cables.

Video connections.

The illustration above shows the video outputs for the three units and their connection to the back of the projection screen. The DVD video connection is made using the component outputs. There are three connections with component outputs: Y, Cr and Cb (also referred to as Y, Pr and Pb). A cable set manufactured for component connections should be used. The Cable receiver video connection is made using the S-video output that uses a multi-pin cable. The VCR video connection is made using a composite output. A composite output uses a standard video RCA cable. The DVD and cable receiver connections could have used the composite output but component or S-video outputs should be your first choice when a monitor or projection screen can accommodate them.

Video and cable ends.

Component output is transmitted on three channels: one channel for luminance (brightness or black and white information) information, and two channels of color. A component signal carries more color detail and eliminates rainbow patterns completely.

S-video output separates the video signal into separate luminance and chrominance (color) signals in order to maintain a better video quality.

Composite output combines the signals into a single composite video connection
